But there are a few simple habits and expectations we recommend to all our customers to help get them the best performance, efficiency, and longevity out of their system.
1. Set It and Let It Run
Heat pumps are designed to maintain temperature, not to blast heat in short bursts.
Unlike oil or gas systems, they operate best when the thermostat is left at a consistent setpoint. Frequently turning the temperature up and down can reduce efficiency and create uneven comfort.
When properly sized and installed by Royal River Heat Pumps, your system is intended to run steadily and quietly in the background.
2. Keep Your Filters Clean
Clean airflow is critical to performance.
Indoor filters should be checked and cleaned or replaced every 30 to 60 days, depending on use and household conditions. Dirty filters restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and can shorten equipment life.
If your system is not heating or cooling as expected, the first thing to check is the filter.
3. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear
Your outdoor unit needs room to breathe.
Make sure snow, leaves, and debris are cleared away, especially during winter. The unit should remain above snow level and have open space in front and around it so air can move freely.
It is also normal to see water draining from the bottom of the unit during winter. That is part of the defrost cycle and does not indicate a problem.
4. Understand How Supplemental Systems Work
If your heat pump was installed as a supplemental system alongside an oil or gas furnace, it is designed to handle the majority of heating during mild and moderate conditions.
The existing system remains in place for extreme cold or peak demand.

5. Schedule Professional Maintenance

6. Know What 'Normal' Heat Pump Operation Looks Like
Heat pumps often run longer than traditional systems. Airflow may feel gentler. The system may enter defrost mode during winter.
These are all signs of normal operation.
